DIY Movie Theatre

One of the things we wanted to do these school holidays was go to the movies. We wanted to see Madagascar 3 after enjoying the first two movies several billion times on DVD in India.

However, after spending Thursday at the zoo and spending a small fortune on entry and then some more at the gift shop, we didn’t want to spend too much money the next day. Looking at the movie prices and we had to rethink our plans. It was going to cost $67 to go to the movies. Not even the 3D movie or gold class. Just the plain old 2D version at a suburban movie theatre. That’s not even counting the ninety million dollars they charge you for popcorn, so we decided to get creative and it wasn’t that hard really.

We covered the opening to the loungeroom with a black sheet to create some theatre darkness. Printed off some movie tickets thanks to google and the printer and then popped some popcorn, put it in these cute little treat boxes I bought for $2 for a pack of 8 from Coles and voila! Done.

Millar paid me a gajillion plastic gold coins for two tickets with popcorn – nice boy paid for his sister – and they were seated in the front row bean bag and kiddy couch row of our living room.

The movie was Chipmunks 2 (oh my ears, cut them off please) and the kids enjoyed the experience so much that we did it again the next day with another movie – Chipmunks 3 in case you were wondering; not recommended for people with ears.

Heaps cheaper than the real movies and pretty fun  really.

look at Millar’s face… he’s confused about the Chipmunks too

Love it! Going to the movies is crazy expensive, my hot tip for the zoo is turn those tickets into a yearly pass (I think you have a few weeks post visit to do that) – it seems pricey but it’ll pay you back a thousand-fold this summer!!

What a great idea! We’ll have to give it a try. We haven’t seen any of the Chipmunk movies… we saw some promotional thing, one of those stage shows in a shopping centre, a while back, and that really put us off!

I agree with Louisa – worth getting a zoo pass. A family membership is not that much more than what you paid! We go to the zoo about 6 times a year – at least – well worth it. Love your creativity in organising the home movie experience. Well done! Sorry that your ears had to endure those Chipmunks though!
