Gay Marriage.

Disclaimer: I have some pretty strong views about a lot of things. If you know me in real life, you know that about me already. I have left most of my strong opinions out of this blog until now because I didn’t want to get all angry or serious or political. However, I can no longer just sit back and be angry without writing about it. When I get angry, I swear. It doesn’t mean I’m uneducated, it just means I’m angry. So here is my rant about gay marriage.

The fact that we, as a society, are still even discussing the issue of gay marriage is fucking ridiculous. In what fucking universe is it ok to decide that a large chunk of the human race are not worthy of something the rest of us are?
I don’t give a flying fucking squirrel if it was “how you were raised”. As an adult, you need to make up your own mind about right and wrong. Keep family jewellery and nick-nacks as sentimental heirlooms, not their close minded, fear-based, ignorant attitudes.

I wish that my gay friends could get married like the rest of the human race are allowed to do. Like I was allowed to do. I hope that I’m not naive by hoping this will happen in my lifetime. I don’t want my children to have to fight this stupid, outdated bigotry.

Not every gay couple wants to be married – of course not. Not every heterosexual couple wants to be married either, but at least they have that choice. Civil union is a poor consolation prize when you don’t get to chose it. Compromise is not enough. Compromise is what led to letting “coloured” people on the bus as long as they sat at the back.

We look back on those days with disgust and we look at how far we’ve come. We still have a fucking long way to go before every human is considered equal and if I keep quiet about discrimination, then I’m just condoning it and I want my children to know, unequivocally, that this was NOT ok with me.

My message to those against gay marriage: It’s not going to hurt you to allow it. Grow the fuck up and stop believing that you are special and deserve a special status. That includes you Julia Gillard. No one is better than anyone else simply because of their race, gender, religion, sexuality or where they happen to be born. What makes you a better person is what you do with your life. Being a hypocritical bigot with a superiority complex does not make you a better person. It makes you WRONG.

Right there with you! I don’t normally speak up about social or political issues but I can’t keep quiet anymore. I’m with you. I don’t want my kids to shame me for being part of the crowd that says this discrimination is OK. Thanks for linking up xx Fi

I’m with you also. My husband, parents and his parents are not. Old country morals stick like glue to some people. But it just makes no sense to me. Let people love who they chose and marry who they choose. It’ll happen, and future generations will look back and wonder what the opposition was all about.
